FiveM server hosting or a managed server: which one to pick
Cheap FiveM server hosting comes with a two-digit monthly price. A managed FiveM server comes with a higher one. Comparing those two numbers means comparing an empty machine with a running city: the real comparison adds up the machine, the roleplay base, the setup, the updates and the developer who handles them.
This guide runs that calculation over twelve months, then compares both routes on what never shows up on an invoice: time before launch, security and keeping up with updates. It is written by Nova Studio, which offers a managed server; the last part says who is still better off with a bare host.
01Bare host and managed server are two different products
A bare FiveM host rents you a machine or a slice of one, a panel to start and stop the server, file access and often a MySQL database. FXServer sometimes installs in one click. Everything else is on you: the framework (ESX, QBCore or QBox), the dozens of scripts that make a city, configuring them and keeping them current.
A managed server starts from the other end: the city comes installed with the machine, and whoever provides it keeps it up to date. At Nova, that is a FiveM RP server base built on QBox, with 67 modules shipped together and configured from inside the game. In between, many servers combine a bare host, a bought pack and a freelance developer. That third route is the one worth costing honestly.
02Total cost: three lines to add up
With a bare host, the bill reads in three lines: the machine (with or without anti-DDoS), the base or pack, and the developer who installs and maintains it all. The table below uses the median budget from our guide on what a FiveM RP server costs, for a 128-player server. Swap in your own quotes: the method stays the same.
| Item | Host + pack, do it yourself | Host + pack + freelancer | Nova, NOVA+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated machine | €50 × 12 = €600 | €50 × 12 = €600 | included |
| Game anti-DDoS | €10 × 12 = €120 | €10 × 12 = €120 | included |
| Base or pack | €150 one-off | €150 one-off | included, 67 modules |
| Setup | your time | €100 | €0, automatic |
| Updates and fixes | your time | 4 h × €20 × 12 = €960 | included |
| Total over 12 months | €870, plus your evenings | €1,930 | €1,788 monthly, €1,490 yearly |
Doing it yourself stays cheapest in euros, as long as your evenings count for nothing. Once a developer enters the picture, the gap flips: at 128 players, the NOVA+ subscription costs less than the median budget, with no setup to pay for and no fixes to order. In year two, the base and setup are not paid again, but the developer comes back every month.
03Time to launch
Price does not tell you how long it takes before your first player joins. With a bare host, the machine is ready in minutes, but the city is not. Here are the steps, in the order they come up.
| Step | Bare host | Nova managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Machine ready | a few minutes | a few minutes, city included |
| Database and server.cfg | to create and fill in | done at creation |
| Framework and scripts | to install, in the right start order | 67 modules already in place |
| Game settings | in files, one restart per try | in game, with /admin |
| Staff and whitelist | scripts to add and wire to Discord | ranks taken from your Discord roles |
| Typical lead time | often several weeks | the time it takes to write your rules |
At Nova, you link your Discord account, pick a name, paste your Cfx.re key and a Steam API key, and the server installs itself once you pay. Getting started follows that path up to the first connected player.
04Security: who locks the doors
On a bare host, server security is your job. By default FiveM listens on port 30120, over both TCP and UDP, and the txAdmin web interface on port 40120. Leaving that interface open to the whole internet behind a weak password is like leaving the key under the doormat. Here's what you have to handle yourself:
- An anti-DDoS that filters game traffic, not just web traffic: RP servers are frequent targets, often after a feud between communities.
- A firewall that only opens the ports you need, and protected admin access.
- Scripts from trusted sources: a pirated or "leaked" resource often hides a backdoor that hands over control of the server (FiveM server packs covers these risks).
- Tested backups, and someone who knows how to restore them on the night things break.
- An anticheat, and logs that show who gave what to whom.
At Nova, the machine sits behind OVH Game anti-DDoS, tuned for FiveM. The anticheat runs server-side, with a suspicion score and graduated sanctions, and staff actions are logged to your Discord channels. Any archive you upload is checked before it is unpacked, and a new resource arrives switched off. Until setup is finished, the server refuses every connection except yours.
05Updates: the line nobody prices in
FiveM keeps moving. The game gets new versions, and since July 2026 FiveM for GTA V Enhanced has been in early access, with its own server files, Asset Escrow not implemented yet, and txAdmin, which several hosts still report as unavailable; worth testing. Any change can break a script that worked the day before. A bought pack stays frozen at the version you paid for: keeping up is your job, or a developer’s.
- Back up the files and the database before touching anything.
- Read what changed in the framework and in every script, author by author.
- Merge the new version with your own edits without overwriting your settings.
- Test on a staging server, then restart the live one at a quiet hour.
- Roll back if a player reports what broke, and start over.
At Nova, that list does not exist for you. Nova Studio publishes updates for every server at once, database migrations included, and they apply at the next restart, or on their own as soon as the server is empty, an option that is on by default. A scheduled restart waits until no player is connected: it never cuts a game short (restarts and updates).
06What you keep and what you hand over
A managed server has a trade-off, and it is better to know it before choosing: you give up control over the whole machine. That is what lets an update apply without you, because nobody can merge a new version into a framework every server has edited.
| Bare host | Nova managed server | |
|---|---|---|
| Access to the whole machine | yes, usually | no, only to your scripts |
| Choice of framework | free: ESX, QBCore, QBox or your own | Nova, on QBox |
| Your own scripts | anywhere | in resources/[client] |
| Databases | yours | yours, with a table editor |
| Server console | yes | yes, live |
| Game settings | in files | in game, with /admin |
Game settings never go through a file: jobs, ranks, salaries, economy, items and permissions are set from the in-game admin panel, which shows the players affected before a change is saved. Your scripts are uploaded from your account area (adding your scripts).
07Who should pick what
With some 7,100 FiveM servers online in mid-October 2026, what brings players back is not the host: it is the city. The right choice is the one that leaves your team time to bring it to life.
- You are a developer, or have one on the team: a bare host gives you full freedom, including staying on ESX or writing your own framework. Nova does not cover that case.
- You want to learn FiveM inside out and you have time: a bare host and an open source base are a good school, as long as you accept the late nights fixing things.
- You have a very specific project and a budget: a trusted freelancer on a bare host makes sense, since you are paying for custom work. Budget for ongoing maintenance, not just the setup.
- You want to open a city and look after your players rather than your files: a managed FiveM server costs about as much as a median budget and removes the least predictable line, maintenance.
08Moving to a managed server with Nova
One subscription per server covers the machine, anti-DDoS, the base, updates and support: NOVA at €99 a month for 64 players, NOVA+ at €149 for 128 players, NOVA INFINITY at €229 for 256 players, which scales up to 1,024 players with extra slots. Yearly billing charges ten months for twelve, and setup is free.
- Pick a plan on the pricing page, which shows the current offers and the ones you can buy today: before the first stable version, only the plans with beta channel access can be bought.
- Link your Discord account, name the server, paste your Cfx.re key and your Steam key.
- Pay: the server installs itself within minutes.
- Join it from FiveM, finish the setup and type /admin to configure your city.
Coming from a bare host? Scripts written for QBCore or QBox have a good chance of running, those written for ESX need adapting, and characters from another base are not converted automatically. The guide to migrating from ESX or QBCore to QBox covers what carries over.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose cheap FiveM server hosting?
Compare at the same player count, not at the headline price: check the memory and CPU you get and whether the anti-DDoS filters game traffic. Then add the base, setup and maintenance: the twelve-month total is what tells you whether a plan is really cheap.
Is a managed server more expensive than a FiveM host?
On the listed price, yes. On total cost, not necessarily: once a developer installs and maintains the server, a median budget for 128 players goes above the NOVA+ subscription, which includes the machine, anti-DDoS, base and updates.
How long does it take to get a FiveM server online?
On a bare host, the machine is ready quickly, but installing and configuring a city often takes several weeks. With Nova, the server installs within minutes of payment; what remains is your rules, your staff and your in-game settings.
Which ports does a FiveM server use?
By default, port 30120 over TCP and UDP for the game, and port 40120 for the txAdmin web interface, which should not be left open to the whole internet without protection. On a managed server such as Nova, that is not your job.
Can I install ESX on a Nova server?
No. The framework is Nova, built on QBox, and that is what we keep updated. If you want ESX or your own framework, a bare host is the right tool.
Do I need a Cfx key with a managed server?
Yes, as for any FiveM server. You create it on the Cfx.re portal and paste it when you create the server. Nova does not sell it or bill for it.
